Iran Reports Mazut Quality Upgrades, Emissions Cuts

Iran has upgraded mazut quality at its refineries, launched crude-oil desulfurization projects and cut daily gas flaring by up to 14 million cubic meters as part of broader efforts to curb air pollution, the head of the Environmental Protection Organization said.

According to president.ir, the Cabinet met Sunday under President Masoud Pezeshkian.

During the session, Department of the Environment Chief Shina Ansari presented a detailed report on the administration’s positive steps to reduce air pollution. Measures include scrapping aging vehicles, electrifying parts of the transportation fleet, tightening oversight of automobile production and conducting emissions tests at the end of assembly lines at two automakers.

Ansari said distribution of standard fuel to power plants has sharply reduced polluted days in Arak, from 27 to five. She also cited refinery upgrades to improve fuel oil quality, implementation of crude-oil desulfurization processes, expanded use of renewable energy and a rise in installed renewable capacity from 1,200 megawatts to 4,000 megawatts. - Shana
