Libya's Misrata Free Zone Discusses Maintenance & Training Cooperation with Malta

The director of the Misrata Free Zone, Ayman al-Darwish, discussed cooperation in maintenance and training with Malta’s chargé d’affaires to Libya, Sean Cirkop.

The meeting focused on prospects for economic and trade cooperation and investment opportunities, according to a statement issued by the Libyan side on Sunday. The parties reviewed opportunities for Maltese companies and shipping lines to benefit from the zone’s location, infrastructure and logistics capabilities to support trade.

Cirkop was briefed on the free zone’s facilities, including the operational and logistical capacity of its seaport and infrastructure supporting commercial and investment activities.

In January, Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah announced a project to develop and expand the Misrata Free Zone port terminal, with investment of up to US$2.7 billion and more than 60,000 jobs expected to be created. The project involves Qatari, Italian and Swiss companies, including MSC, and aims to increase the port’s annual capacity to four million containers.
