Iranian Gas Facilities Undergo Major Overhaul

The CEO of East Oil and Gas Production Company said a major maintenance program is underway at the company’s facilities to improve reliability and ensure stable gas production during the cold season.

The Khangiran operational area is a strategic source of energy for eastern and northeastern Iran. Its daily production of about 65 million cubic meters of gas supplies more than 14 million people across six provinces, supporting residential, industrial and power-generation needs.

The area becomes particularly important during winter, when gas from the Mozduran, Shourijeh B and Shourijeh D reservoirs is used not only for households but also as feedstock for industries and fuel for power plants. The provinces of Razavi Khorasan, North Khorasan, South Khorasan, Mazandaran, Golestan and parts of Semnan receive gas from the region.

The overhaul is therefore more than routine maintenance; it is part of a broader plan to safeguard gas production during the winter months. The work includes inspection, repair and preparation of gas production, gathering and metering equipment to ensure the facilities operate reliably as winter demand rises.

The annual overhaul of the Khangiran metering center and central gathering facilities is among East Oil and Gas Production Company’s largest maintenance operations.

Previous experience has shown that careful planning to minimize production downtime is essential. During one maintenance campaign, the overhaul of the metering center was reduced from about one week to four days, allowing technical work to be completed while minimizing disruption to gas supplies. In 2025, more than 170,000 man-hours of major maintenance were carried out in the Khangiran area, preparing the facilities to operate at maximum production capacity during winter.

Alireza Kamizi, CEO of East Oil and Gas Production Company, told Shana that the company conducts major maintenance annually, covering different parts of the gas production chain, from gathering and metering centers to related facilities.

He said overhaul work is currently underway at the metering center, with about 250 employees and operational personnel involved. About 3,000 man-hours have been planned for the current phase.

Kamizi said the maintenance program began at the gathering centers and is aimed at preparing equipment and facilities for safe, stable and continuous gas production while increasing their reliability ahead of the cold season.

He added that production from most fields in the Khangiran area is halted during the overhaul, although production continues from facilities that remain in operation, including Shourijeh B.

Tus Field to Boost Northeast Gas Output

Kamizi also provided an update on development of the Tus gas field, saying a well brought online last year is producing about 1.5 million cubic meters of gas per day, while Well No. 4 is now nearing completion.

He said engineering and construction work on Well No. 4 is being carried out in cooperation with the engineering and construction department of Central Iran Oil Fields Company. Initial test results indicate the well is expected to have a favorable production rate.

Kamizi said the project operator is expected to complete engineering and construction work by the beginning of this winter and hand the well over to East Oil and Gas Production Company, allowing Well No. 4 to enter production as soon as possible.

He said development of the Tus field is an important project for strengthening gas supply reliability in northeastern Iran and that production capacity will increase as additional planned wells are completed.

Shourijeh D Stores 1.5 bcm of Gas

Kamizi also highlighted the strategic role of the Shourijeh D reservoir in meeting winter gas demand, saying more than 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas has so far been stored there.

He said he expects gas storage operations at the reservoir to resume at a higher capacity after the overhaul and preparation of the facilities, helping the company meet planned production and withdrawal commitments during the cold months.

Gas storage at Shourijeh D plays an important role in maintaining reliable supplies to northeastern Iran. The company plans to maximize the reservoir’s capacity to ensure adequate gas supplies during peak winter demand.

Kamizi said timely preparation of facilities, development of the Tus field and increased storage capacity at Shourijeh D are three key priorities for maintaining and strengthening gas production and supply in eastern Iran. - Shana
