Algeria’s Natural Gas Output Hits 3-Year High

Algeria’s natural gas production recorded a significant increase during the first half of 2026, reaching its highest level in three years at 54.01 billion cubic metres, representing a 4.2% rise compared with the same period in 2025.

According to the latest data from the Washington-based Energy Research Unit, Algeria’s natural gas output increased from 51.81 billion cubic metres in the first half of 2025 to 54.01 billion cubic metres during the first six months of 2026.

At the same time, domestic gas consumption rose by 6.3% to 28.49 billion cubic metres in the first half of 2026, compared with 26.81 billion cubic metres during the corresponding period a year earlier, largely reflecting demand from the electricity-generation sector.

Against this backdrop, Algeria continues to pursue efforts to increase the share of solar energy in its electricity mix, with the aim of reducing domestic reliance on natural gas and freeing up additional volumes for export to European markets, where Algeria is among the leading suppliers.

Meanwhile, European countries are competing to secure supplies of Algerian gas amid disruptions to energy supplies resulting from the war in the Middle East and growing recognition of Algeria as a secure source of energy supplies.

Algeria’s gas exports, combining pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), increased by 2.4% to 23.97 billion cubic metres during the first half of 2026, compared with 23.40 billion cubic metres in the same period of 2025.

The Energy Research Unit’s data also show a sustained increase in Algeria’s natural gas production since 2022, when output stood at 49.23 billion cubic metres. Production has continued to rise progressively, reaching the latest level recorded during the first half of 2026.

According to the latest monthly figures, Algeria’s pipeline gas exports reached 3.06 billion cubic metres in June, compared with 2.95 billion cubic metres during the same month in 2025.

As part of its broader economic strategy, Algeria, under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is seeking to consolidate its position as a strategically reliable energy supplier by honouring its commitments to its partners while working to increase its exports, with an objective of reaching 100 billion cubic metres.
