Egypt Minister, El Sewedy President Meet to Accelerate Phosphate Fertilizer Project

Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, met with Ahmed El-Sewedy, President and CEO of El-Sewedy Electric, to discuss accelerating the implementation of a phosphate fertilizer plant in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, according to a ministry statement.

The project is being developed through a partnership between the Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority (MRMIA), New Valley Company for Mineral Resources and Oil Clay (WadiCo), and El-Sewedy Electric, as part of the government’s strategy to maximize the value of Egypt’s mineral resources by expanding domestic processing and manufacturing.

During the meeting, Badawi stressed the project’s importance in developing the utilization of Egypt’s phosphate resources and increasing their economic value by converting mining raw materials into higher-value intermediate and finished products.

The minister highlighted the private sector’s role in developing downstream industries and maximizing the economic returns from Egypt’s natural resources. He said the ministry is prioritizing integrated industries based on locally available mineral resources to create new opportunities for investment, production, and exports.

On July 2026, MRMIA, WadiCo, and El-Sewedy Electric signed a shareholders’ agreement to establish a company responsible for developing, constructing, managing, and operating the integrated phosphate fertilizer plant in Ain Sokhna.
