AGOCO Launches Environmental Project to Recover Oil & Recycle Water at Libyan Field

Libya's AGOCO announced progress on an oil recovery and disposal pit treatment project at the Mesla oil field, describing it as the first initiative of its kind in Libya’s oil sector. The project aims to reduce environmental risks while maximizing the use of hydrocarbon resources.

During a field visit to Mesla on Tuesday, AGOCO Management Committee Chairman Mohamed Ben Shatwan reviewed progress on the project. According to the company, the initiative has enabled the recovery of significant quantities of residual oil from disposal pits, reducing the risk of spills and pollution. Several of the targeted pits now contain only water after surface oil was removed.

AGOCO said the project also includes the construction of an additional evaporation pond to accelerate the reduction of accumulated water volumes, as well as the installation and operation of water treatment systems to reduce salinity. The systems are expected to produce around 4,000 cubic meters of low-salinity water per day, which will be reused to support field operations.

The company added that the project also involves treating oil-contaminated sediments and sand through oil recovery and bioremediation technologies, with the aim of restoring environmentally affected sites in line with international best practices.

Ben Shatwan said the project represents a strategic shift in the management of oil resources and waste, stressing that AGOCO seeks to balance increased production with environmental protection in support of sustainability and the national economy.

AGOCO said the initiative reflects its commitment to implementing environmental sustainability standards across its oil fields, positioning the Mesla field as a national model for oil waste management, reducing environmental impact, and relying on Libyan expertise to deliver advanced technical solutions that support the sustainable development of the country’s oil sector.
