IOPTC Reports Tehran Pipeline Oil, Product Transfer

The head of the Tehran region of the Iranian Oil Pipelines and Telecommunications Company said pipelines in the region transport 153 million liters of crude oil a day, underscoring Tehran’s role as the main artery for moving oil and petroleum products to northern Iran.

Hamidreza Keyhanpour said the daily volume is equivalent to the nonstop movement of at least 5,000 tanker trucks, highlighting the safety and environmental benefits of pipeline transport, according to the Tehran regional pipelines company.

Keyhanpour cited advances in Iran’s oil transportation industry since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, saying the country has increasingly relied on domestic capabilities in engineering, project execution, equipment manufacturing and operations.

He said the Tehran region, the country’s largest oil terminal, has completed major maintenance, repair and optimization projects on schedule by relying on the technical expertise of local specialists.

Tehran a key hub for northern Iran

Keyhanpour said the Tehran region is one of 12 pipeline regions nationwide and operates eight inbound and 16 outbound lines, making it the primary corridor for transporting crude oil and petroleum products to the northern half of the country.

Nationwide, more than 123 billion liters of crude oil and petroleum products are delivered annually to consumption centers through about 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) of pipelines, he said.

96m liters of products transported daily

Keyhanpour said that over the past 10 months, the Tehran region has transported more than 96 million liters of petroleum products per day to National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Co. depots in Tehran, Karaj and northern provinces, a 6% increase from the same period last year.

He said about 17.5 billion liters of crude oil were delivered to the Tehran and Tabriz refineries during the same period.

Following the launch of the 20-inch Naein–Kashan–Ray pipeline, an average of 182,000 barrels per day — about 29 million liters — of regular and Euro 4 gasoline has been transported along the route, he said. The addition of the 26-inch Shazand–Rey line since 2022 has boosted the region’s transfer capacity by about 22%.

Keyhanpour said the region also supplies liquid fuel to power plants in Baqershahr, Montazer Qaem, Damavand, Gilan and Shahid Rajaei in Qazvin. Deliveries exceeded 1.5 billion liters by late January, up 28% year over year, and the Kashan power plant is expected to be added soon.

Fuel supply to Tehran airports

Keyhanpour said about 2 million liters of jet fuel and ATK are delivered daily to Imam Khomeini and Mehrabad airports through two 8- and 10-inch pipelines. From the start of the current year through late January, 625 million liters of fuel were supplied to the two airports.

He said fuel storage levels remain strong, aided by transfers from the Persian Gulf Star Refinery.

Keyhanpour added that energy efficiency projects have reduced energy consumption by about 1.2% from last year and said continued monitoring, timely maintenance and regular inspections are central to ensuring safe, reliable fuel transport. - Shana
