Iran Issues Permits for Solar Power Projects

Iran has issued construction permits for about 100,000 megawatts of solar power capacity to encourage private sector investment, a senior official at the country’s renewable energy agency said on Sunday.

Jafar Mohammadnejad Sigaroudi, deputy for investment at the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA), said renewable sources such as solar and wind could help meet part of Iran’s electricity demand, though only around 15% of issued permits are expected to translate into actual generation.

He said renewables alone could not fully address Iran’s estimated 23,000-24,000 MW power supply shortfall, but could ease the imbalance.

Globally, renewables accounted for 46% of electricity generation in 2024, Sigaroudi said, noting that many countries with fewer natural advantages than Iran have achieved stronger performance in the sector. - IRNA
