Iraq's Final Census Results Announced

The final results of Iraq's national census have been announced, showing a total population of 46,118,793 people.

According to the Ministry of Planning, detailed census data will begin to be distributed to state institutions from next week, covering ministries, provincial authorities and other official bodies. The census is the first conducted in 37 years and is expected to form the main statistical base for future development planning and population policy.

Key findings show:

Total number of households: 8,054,385
Total population (Iraqis and foreigners): 46,118,793
Foreign residents in Iraq: 340,131
Iraqi nationals: 45,778,662

The population by gender stands at 23,161,000 males (50.2%) and 22,957,000 females (49.8%). Male-headed households exceed 7 million, while more than 910,000 households are headed by women.

Age structure data indicate:

Ages 0-14: 16,555,000 (35.9%)
Ages 15-64: 27,875,000 (60.4%)
Ages 65 and above: 1,688,000 (3.6%)

The ministry said this confirms Iraq is in a demographic dividend phase, with a large working-age population.

Housing and dependency indicators include:

Average household size: 5.7 persons
Total dependency ratio: 65
Child dependency: 59
Elderly dependency: 6
Owner-occupied or living free with parents: 72.14%
Private rental housing: 19.41%
Total private housing units: 8,340,000

The ministry added that governorate-level datasets are ready and will be delivered to local governments, including village and neighbourhood-level statistics, followed by further analysis to identify service and development needs at local level.
