Dubai-based renewables company AMEA Power said on Tuesday it has commissioned its 300-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at a site in Egypt’s Aswan Governorate. Image source: AMEA Power (www.ameapower.com)The battery, delivered ahead of schedule, is co-located with AMEA Power’s 500-MW Abydos solar photovoltaic plant, which began operations in December 2024.The project reached financial close recently, with backing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The facility represents AMEA Power’s first large-scale energy storage deployment in North Africa and it is also Egypt’s first-ever utility-scale BESS.Now online, the BESS will form part of Egypt’s 4-GW Emergency Renewable Energy Programme, which aims to meet the country’s growing demand for power and lower its reliance on imported natural gas.
