Dubai-Based AMEA Power’s BESS to Lower Egypt’s Reliance on Gas Imports

Dubai-based renewables company AMEA Power said on Tuesday it has commissioned its 300-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at a site in Egypt’s Aswan Governorate. AMEA Power's BESS project in Egypt. Image source: AMEA Power (www.ameapower.com)

The battery, delivered ahead of schedule, is co-located with AMEA Power’s 500-MW Abydos solar photovoltaic plant, which began operations in December 2024.

The project reached financial close recently, with backing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The facility represents AMEA Power’s first large-scale energy storage deployment in North Africa and it is also Egypt’s first-ever utility-scale BESS.

Now online, the BESS will form part of Egypt’s 4-GW Emergency Renewable Energy Programme, which aims to meet the country’s growing demand for power and lower its reliance on imported natural gas.
