UAE's Hassyan Desalination Project Set for 2027 Completion

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has announced that steady progress is being made on the AED3.38 billion (~US$1 billion) Hassyan Complex Desalination Project with the work more than 55% completed.

The SWRO plant, which has a 180 MIGD production capacity, is set for 2027 completion, said Dewa in a statement.

This project is a key component of Dewa’s strategy to enhance Dubai’s water desalination capacity, it added.

The Hassyan Complex Desalination Project supports Dewa's strategy to increase Dubai’s desalinated water production capacity, remarked its MD & CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.

It is the world’s largest project of its kind using RO technology and Dewa’s first project being implemented under the Independent Water Producer (IWP) model, he noted.

"We work to achieve the objectives of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% clean energy in Dubai by 2050," stated Al Tayer, while reviewing the progress on Phase I of the Hassyan Project.

Al Tayer pointed out that Dewa was building water desalination plants based on SWRO technology and in the next five years, its will add 240 MIGD of desalination capacity, using SWRO technology.

"By that time, our total installed desalinated capacity will reach 735 MIGD. By 2030, we aim to produce 100% of the desalinated water by a clean energy mix that uses renewable energy and waste heat," he added
