Iraq’s AUIB Gets US Funding to Develop AI

The American University of Iraq-Baghdad (AUIB) has announced that it has received a US$2.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of State.

According to a statement from AUIB, this grant will aid AUIB's efforts to revolutionize higher education in alignment with Iraq's National Education Strategy.

The funding will establish two groundbreaking initiatives:

 - the Center for the Advancement of Higher Education in Iraq; and,
 - the Innovation Lab for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Engineering.

This grant represents a significant step toward fostering academic excellence, empowering women in leadership, and driving innovation in education and engineering.

In collaboration with Vanderbilt University, AUIB will leverage these funds to develop its College of Education and Human Development, paving the way for a brighter future for Iraq's next generation of leaders, scholars, and innovators.

Fostering Excellence in Higher Education

AUIB's Center for the Advancement of Higher Education in Iraq will transform the country's educational landscape by providing tailored leadership and faculty development programs for higher education professionals. The center will emphasize governance, academic integrity, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

At least 50% of program participants will be women, reinforcing AUIB's commitment to gender parity. Through professional development, mentorship opportunities, and a fellowship program for academic leaders, the center will deliver sustainable improvements in Iraq's higher education system.

In partnership with Vanderbilt University, AUIB will ensure that Iraqi institutions benefit from global best practices in academic leadership and governance.

Innovation Lab for Artificial Intelligence

To address the growing demand for advanced technology education in Iraq, the grant will also establish the Innovation Lab for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Engineering within AUIB's new College of Engineering.

The lab will feature cutting-edge AI and digital engineering technology, offering students state-of-the-art learning opportunities. Particular emphasis will be placed on supporting women students in networking, collaboration, and skill development.

The Innovation Lab will enhance AUIB's AI curriculum and serve as a hub for AI policy development in Iraq, collaborating with both national and international stakeholders. It will position AUIB as a leader in AI research and education, empowering students to engage with emerging technologies and prepare for the global workforce.

AUIB's Role in Iraq's Educational and Technological Future

These initiatives, supported by the US$2.1 million grant, will solidify AUIB's role as a beacon of quality American-style education in Iraq. They advance key priorities outlined in the U.S.-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement and contribute to Iraq's long-term socioeconomic development.

AUIB President Dr. Michael Mulnix said:

"This funding will allow AUIB to offer unparalleled opportunities for Iraq's students, faculty, and academic leaders, while also positioning Iraq as a key player in the region's AI and higher education advancements.

"We are grateful to the United States Department of State for their continued support and trust in AUIB's vision for the future of education in Iraq."
