SOHAR Launches Net Zero Alliance to Boost Oman’s Carbon Neutrality Efforts

Sohar Port and Freezone (SOHAR), in collaboration with its industrial tenants, has officially announced the formation of the SOHAR Net Zero Alliance, a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to accelerating Oman’s transition towards carbon neutrality by 2050.

Among the industrial tenants that have partnered with Sohar Port and Freezone in forming the SOHAR Net Zero Alliance are OQ, Vale Oman Pelletizing Company, Sohar Aluminum Company, Jindal Shadeed Iron & Steel, Al Tamman Indsil Ferrochrome, Shinas Generating Company, Sohar International Urea & Chemical Industries, Al Batinah Power, and Air Liquide Sohar Industrial Gases. SOHAR Net Zero Alliance has been founded on principles of partnership, transparency, commitment, and inclusiveness. The alliance serves as a platform for stakeholders to share insights, strategies, and requirements, propelling the region’s path toward sustainability.

In a press statement, Emile Hoogsteden, CEO of Sohar Port, emphasized the significance of this alliance and said, “SOHAR Net Zero Alliance signifies our steadfast commitment to spearheading Oman’s journey toward carbon neutrality. Together, we are setting a bold course towards a sustainable and carbon-free future, leaving no stone unturned.” The alliance perfectly aligns with Omani government’s ambitious goal of achieving the 2050 net zero commitment and will work towards securing ample volume of alternative energy, green power, green hydrogen, and the establishment of a third-party Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) facility and services at the Sohar Port and Freezone.

SOHAR Net Zero Alliance will also promote the exchange of knowledge and expertise to ensure a unified voice in discussions with the government. Together, they will implement a shared plan to advance the transition to a sustainable and carbon-neutral future. As one of the fastest-growing ports in the world, Sohar Port and Freezone continues to leverage its strategic location and enhance its services, positioning itself as a key logistics hub within the region and across the world, boasting container, liquids, and bulk terminals.

A powerful combination of the expertise of the Port of Rotterdam and Asyad Group, it is earmarked as one of the sultanate’s mega-projects, home to logistics, petrochemicals, and metal clusters, as well as the region’s first dedicated agriterminal. Today, after 17 years of operation, it serves as the main gateway for import and export in Oman, directly contributing 2.1% of the country’s GDP and almost 26,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. With a focus on sustainable development and cutting-edge technology, SOHAR is leading the development and modernization of the sultanate’s logistics infrastructure and supporting the economic diversification objectives of Oman’s 2040 Vision.
