Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on Monday that Egypt is committed to supporting the role of the United Nations in resolving the Yemeni crisis. Shoukry made the remarks during his meeting in the Egyptian capital of Cairo with UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. During the meeting, Shoukry stressed the importance of an inclusive political process for all parties that preserves Yemen's unity and stability. He also stressed Egypt's commitment to support the UN efforts towards seeking a political solution to the Yemeni crisis and alleviating the humanitarian sufferings of the Yemeni people. For his part, the UN envoy expressed his appreciation for the Egyptian efforts to resolve the crisis in Yemen, hailing Egypt's hosting of large numbers of Yemenis since the outbreak of the conflict. Grundberg also briefed the Egyptian minister on the outcome of his ongoing contacts with various Yemeni and regional parties. Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi group seized control of several northern provinces and forced the Saudi-backed Yemeni government out of the capital Sanaa .
