Iran exported US$53 million worth of goods to Iraq in one month through Mehran customs in the Western province of Ilam, a local official said on Saturday.Head of Ilam Customs Administration Rouhollah Gholami said that the value of exports to Iraq from Mehran border has been over US$53 million in the Iranian month of Farvardin (March 21-April 20). Gholami added that the exported goods weighed over 183,000 tons.He said that watermelon, apple, orange and tomato were agricultural products exported to Iraq through Mehran border. “Although passengers are not allowed to cross the border due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mehran border is open for trade activities,” the official noted.Mehran with 230 km distance from Baghdad is Iran’s closest border city to the Iraqi capital.In relevant remarks in late March, Director-General of the international Business Development Office Rouhollah Estiri said that Iraq is an important destination for the products of Iranian knowledge-based companies."Iraq was the major destination for knowledge-based export followed by Russia, Afghanistan, Syria, and Turkey," he said. Estiri pointed out that the exports to Iraq hit US$152 million.The official also pointed out that the areas with the highest demand for exports were chemicals, pharmaceuticals, polymer materials and industrial machinery, respectively, with the chemical sector recording the highest exports. - Fars, IRIB
