Britain, Germany and France have offered a 5 million-euro (4.4 million pounds) package to Iran to help fight coronavirus in the country, Britain’s Foreign Office said on Monday. The so-called E3 group would provide the support through the World Health Organization or other UN agencies, it said in a statement. The group was also sending medical material to Iran on Monday, including equipment for laboratory tests, protective body suits and gloves, the statement said. A team from the World Health Organization (WHO) arrived in Tehran on Monday to support Iran’s response to a coronavirus outbreak, the WHO said on Monday. “The plane carrying the technical team also contained a shipment of medical supplies and protective equipment to support over 15,000 health care workers, as well as laboratory kits enough to test and diagnose nearly 100,000 people,” it said. The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday that its greatest coronavirus concerns were South Korea, Italy, Iran and Japan, but that it was still possible for all countries to contain the virus. WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus referring to moves to allow supplies to enter Iran despite sanctions over its nuclear program, said: “I would like to commend actually the statement from the United States in support of Iran. The UAE helped the World Health Organization fly experts and medical supplies to Iran as part of efforts to tackle the coronavirus outbreak there. The UAE Air Force deployed an aircraft that carried 7.5 tons of cargo from Dubai to Iran, the UAE’s state news agency WAM reported. “Iran has reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the Middle East,” Dr. Richard Brennan, WHO’s acting regional emergency director, said. “The medical supplies will help equip Iran to contain the virus.”- Reuters, Arab News
