Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, in his capacity as the current President of the Arab Ministerial Water Council, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Executive Secretariat of the 9th World Water Forum ‘Dakar 2021’ represented by Abdoulaye SENE, Executive Secretary of the Forum. The MoU aims at providing a framework for collaboration as Senegal continues preparations for hosting the 9th World Water Forum, which will be held for the first time in a Sub-Saharan African country. Under this memorandum, the Arab Ministerial Water Council seeks to strengthen collaboration with the Forum’s Executive Secretariat in areas of water and sanitation, as both parties are pay attention to the importance of coordination and collaboration to address societal challenges posed by water scarcity and the necessity to improve governing practices of water and sanitation at all levels. In remarks at the virtual signing ceremony, Minister Al Kaabi highlighted the effects of water shortages and disparities, in both the Arab world and sub-Saharan Africa, and challenges such as enhancing water security, ensuring stability and growth, finding new water resources, sustaining agricultural production, managing associated risks, and protecting main eco-systems.Minister Al Kaabi said: “As the source of life, water is an essential component for development and stability, and its security is fundamental to sustaining our existence. This gives great cause for regional and international levels of cooperation and adds a burden of responsibility upon us to deal with all aspects related to this priceless resource.”He also highlighted the importance of the MoU in securing active participation of various stakeholders in the Arab League’s member states in this landmark event and playing a part in its success through strategic cooperation and joint action.This MoU is grounded in the strategic importance of collaboration in this respect to produce shared knowledge regarding possible solutions for water and sanitation problems and to form regional and international partnerships that consolidate efforts across the board. The World Water Forum is the world’s largest event on water and sanitation held every three years. This event brings together a great number of governments, local and international agencies and organizations, NGOs, development banks, companies, civil society organizations, and others to discuss solutions and explore possibilities regarding water issues. Water ministers from all around the world participate in this Forum, along with academics, researchers, and experts in the field.
