Report on Expats Doing Civil Service Work in Bahrain

A total of 7,328 expatriates are currently on government contracts to do civil service work. Parliament and Shura Council Affairs Minister Ghanim Al Buainain, who is politically responsible for the Civil Service Bureau, said in a written reply to a question by MP Khalid Bu Onk that most of the expats were hired to do emergency work for the Health Ministry due to Covid-19.

He added there was need for more qualified medical staff with the numbers hired locally not being enough. “Since 2019 we have terminated the contracts of 1,080 expats hired to do civil service work,” he said. “Currently, we have 7,328 expats under contract with the government and most have been hired by the Health Ministry due to Covid-19.“

Contracts of these expats are not renewed if suitable Bahraini replacements are available. From January 2019 to December last year, we hired 3,175 Bahrainis who were distributed among 42 ministries and government bodies.
