Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti inaugurated on Tuesday the 12th conference and exhibition of Airport Council International (ACI) Asia Pacific Regional Assembly, which is hosted by Qatar's Hamad International Airport (HIA). In his opening speech, HE the minister said in the past two decades that Qatar has taken regional and international steady steps to become an economic, political and civil center of power in the Middle East. Air linkage is an important factor for productivity, economic development and global trade where Qatar, due to its strategic location is able to offer a bridge between mature markets and developing markets in the future, the minister added. HE the minister said, within three years, HIA has ranked itself highly internationally, while the national airline, Qatar Airways, has managed to expand to 150 global destinations. HE Al Sulaiti said HIA has achieved a high level of infrastructure to develop the desired air linkage and Qatar has adopted an approach that aims to a bilateral air services policy in belief that fair competition strengthens passenger growth and traffic, develops the tourism and aviation sectors and contributes to the increase of public economy productivity by increasing trade and business activity. For these reasons, Qatar welcomes all initiatives that allow airlines to reach different global markets and contributes to providing more flight schedule choices and ticket prices to the end user and passengers, HE the minister added. He added that the air travel industry should be an investment priority due to its importance, especially after the projections of the ACI Asia Pacific Regional Assembly that expected a 5-percent passenger traffic growth in the coming 20 years. The global aviation industry is facing important and effective obstacles due to the different economic and political changes of the current times as well as the restrictions and prohibitions on the entry of certain markets and environmental challenges, HE the minister said. HE Al Sulaiti urged all members of the aviation industry to work towards improving their environmental performance and effectively contribute to addressing climate change. In regards to the environment, HE the minister said Qatar Airways and HIA work hard to protect the environment, which is evident in their continuous announcement of their long term interest in environmental performance. HE the minister of transport and communications valued ACI Asia Pacific Regional Assembly's commitment to the Airport Carbon Accreditation, which is an important step towards achieving sustainable development in the aviation sector. HE the Minister also praised Qatar's ranking in the program.HE the minister said, aviation has always played an important role in supporting national and international economies, adding that airports are the main catalysts of this vital industry thanks to its development and rapid growth in a comprehensive and integrated sector, which led to major expansions in aviation. HIA is an integral part of Qatar's long term development strategy, His Excellency added. HIA has achieved high efficiency and capacity rates over the past few years making it the fastest growing airport in the world in addition to ranking the sixth best airport in the world, as voted by passengers, HE the Minister said. HE Al Sulaiti said HIA is seriously developing its services through its new management to increase the airport's development rate and to maintain its central and global position for passengers and air cargo as well as making use of investment opportunities in other international airports. The ACI Asia Pacific Board comprises mainly of the chief executive officers of 22 member airports, and the ACI World Governing Board is composed of chief executive officers of 28 member airports nominated by the regional ACI Boards including Singapore-Changi, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Amsterdam-Heathrow, Paris, Istanbul, Toronto, Beijing and Sydney. It meets twice a year and has the authority to take decisions on all relevant issues that advance the collective interests of airports and promote professional excellence in airport management and operations. The ACI Regional Assembly, Conference and Exhibition, which is hosted annually by airports around the world, will have in attendance aviation leaders and industry influencers who will speak about industry hot-topics through moderated panel discussions. The event will also see exhibitions of innovative products and award-winning services by a large number of service providers.
