PM Opens New Water Project in Baghdad

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has opened the Al-Zuhour [Zuhur] Central Water Project serving the Al-Husseiniya and Al-Intisar districts in northern Baghdad, with a capacity of 10,000 cubic metres per hour.

The project, which had been stalled since 2012, was completed using modern international standards and includes treatment and pumping stations, ten reservoirs, and forty filtration units. Al-Sudani said that addressing stalled projects remains one of the government's biggest challenges, noting that over 2,300 projects were delayed or halted nationwide, but a large number have now been completed through coordinated ministerial and provincial efforts.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to prioritising essential service projects, particularly those that ensure access to clean drinking water, and reported that 21 water projects have been completed so far across Iraq, with 40 more under implementation.

Al-Sudani also highlighted the government's broader water strategy, which includes:

Expanding desalination projects, beginning with Basra and planned for Muthanna, Maysan, and Dhi Qar.
Advancing wastewater treatment plants nationwide, from Mosul to Basra.
Increasing wastewater treatment coverage from 22% to 40%, with a goal of 70% upon project completion.

He praised the efforts of all personnel involved in completing the project and stressed the importance of maintaining and operating such facilities to ensure sustainable public services.
